Weight loss medicines and women: the guides
Periods, PCOS, perimenopause, contraception and fertility while you take a weight loss jab or pill.
6 guides by Sian Anderson. Every clinical claim links to its source. Information, not medical advice. Updated 5 November 2026.
The patient leaflets for the weight loss jabs and pills were written for everyone. These guides pick out the parts that matter to women: what happens to your periods, why the pill may be less reliable after a Mounjaro dose rise, how PCOS and perimenopause change the picture, and what to do before trying for a baby.
Each one is cited to the leaflet, the NHS or the trial, so you can check it and take it to your prescriber.
Every guide in this section
Periods on a weight loss jab: what changes, and when to worry

PCOS and weight loss medicines: what to expect

Fertility, pregnancy and weight loss medicines: how to time it
How long to stop Mounjaro (4 weeks) or Wegovy (2 months) before trying to conceive, what to do if you find out you are pregnant, and breastfeeding.
Perimenopause, HRT and weight loss medicines
Why weight shifts to the middle after 40, how the jabs and pills fit with HRT, and the two things to protect while you lose weight in your 40s and 50s: muscle and bone.

Weight loss medicines and women: questions
Do weight loss injections affect periods?
They can. Weight change itself shifts cycles, and some women notice heavier, lighter or irregular periods for a few months. The periods guide covers when to get checked.
Does Mounjaro stop the pill working?
Mounjaro can make tablet contraception less reliable for four weeks after starting and after each dose rise. The contraception guide sets out the options.
