The target

The NHS guideline for adults is 150 minutes of moderate activity a week, and a brisk walk counts in full. That is 30 minutes on five days, or 20 minutes every day, or three 10-minute walks on five days. Short walks add up. The old idea that only a session over 30 minutes counts was dropped years ago.

Brisk means you can talk but not sing. About 100 steps a minute for most people, or a pace of 3 miles an hour. A stroll with the dog that stops every lamp post is good for the dog.

Why it suits the medicine

  • It is gentle on a stomach that feels full. Running and high-impact classes slosh.
  • A ten-minute walk after a meal helps the slow stomach move food along and eases bloating and reflux.
  • It lowers blood sugar after eating.
  • It needs no kit, no booking, and no energy you do not have in the nausea weeks.
  • It gets you daylight, which helps sleep.

What it does not do

Walking does not protect muscle during fast weight loss. For that you need resistance exercise twice a week, which the strength guide covers in 20 minutes with no kit. Walking and strength are the two halves of the Chief Medical Officers' advice. Do both.

Start where you are. If 10 minutes is too far, 5 is fine. The habit matters more than the number for the first month.

Steps

Ten thousand steps a day was a marketing figure from a 1960s Japanese pedometer. Research since puts the point where benefits level off at around 7,000 to 8,000 steps a day for most adults, with gains from every increase below that. If a counter motivates you, use it. If it nags you, turn it off and use minutes instead.

Hills, poles and pace

Once 30 minutes is easy, add hills rather than time. A hill raises the heart rate and loads the thighs and bottom without any impact. Walking poles take load off the knees and bring the arms in. Intervals, a minute fast and two minutes easy, repeated, turn a 30-minute walk into something closer to a run for the heart.

Feet and joints

As weight comes off, knees and hips get easier, which is one of the first things people notice. Shoes matter more than clothing. A pair of cushioned trainers that fit, replaced every 500 miles or so, prevents most of the shin and heel pain that stops people. Heel pain first thing in the morning is often plantar fasciitis, and the NHS page has the stretches.

In the nausea weeks

A slow walk in fresh air settles nausea for many people. Keep it short, keep water with you, and turn back if you feel dizzy. Skip it on a day you cannot keep fluids down. The walk will be there tomorrow.
